It’s the First Annual Addiction Nurses Week! (Sept. 24th-30th)
Celebrate the contribution of nurses in addiction treatment and be a part of Recovery Month – September 1st-30th.
National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month, now in its 19th year, is an annual observance that takes place during the month of September. Recovery Month highlights the societal benefits of substance abuse treatment, lauds the contributions of treatment providers, and promotes the message that recovery from substance abuse in all its forms is possible. Recovery Month also serves to educate the public on substance abuse as a national health crisis that addiction is a treatable disease, and that recovery is possible. Recovery Month highlights the benefits of treatment for not only the affected individual, but for their family, friends, workplace, and society as a whole. Educating the public reduces the stigma associated with addiction and treatment. Accurate knowledge of the disease helps people to understand the importance of supporting treatment programs, those who work within the treatment field, and those in need of treatment.
Recovery Month provides a platform to celebrate people in recovery and those who serve them. Each September, thousands of treatment programs around the country celebrate their successes and share them with their neighbors, friends, and colleagues in an effort to educate the public about treatment, how it works, for whom, and why. Substance abuse treatment providers have made significant accomplishments, having transformed the lives of untold thousands of Americans. These successes often go unnoticed by the broader population; therefore, Recovery Month provides a vehicle to celebrate these successes.
What you can do – Addiction nurses are integral to the process. Addiction nurses know firsthand the effects of addiction and the process of recovery, from treatment to counseling to education and from working with patients, families and communities. Now addiction nurses can celebrate their experience along with their colleagues in the field of substance use disorders. CSAT will work with us and link IntNSA to their website and the Recovery Month website. The materials and resources to help you publicize this joint effort will be available at www.intnsa.org and www.recoverymonth.gov/2008. Since the colors of the Recovery Month literature are purple and pink this year, everyone is asked to wear purple and pink ribbons during Addiction Nurses Week – September 24th – 30th. We are also asking EVERYONE to spread the word, not only at their facilities, but also to any local and state agencies or associations state nurses, peer assistance – any where a nurse works! Perhaps you know a local politician who could write a proclamation. Widespread public awareness is our goal! If you have a contact you think should be linked to the website or a suggestion you need help with, please let Suzan (SuzanB5753@aol.com) or Carolyn (carolynab@earthlink.net) know. An informational flyer can be downloaded here, and hopefully we can use it to spread the word!
This week will lead us right up to our conference. Wear your pink and purple. Join us in Atlanta to celebrate the successful ending of the first Addiction Nurses Week! We will have successfully initiated a period of national recognition for all nurses working in the field of addictions and it is only fitting that it will culminate with a celebration at our conference. Work hard! Then come celebrate at the IntNSA Conference in Atlanta!
